The Indian government is in the process of canceling the registration of more than a dozen Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card holders. This action is going to be taken against the elements involved in pro-Khalistan and anti-national propaganda.
OCI Card is a special facility for Indian people who have settled abroad and have taken citizenship there. OCI is also called Overseas Citizen of India Card. The Citizenship Act, 1955 was amended to include Indian overseas citizens in August 2005.
Actually, many countries of the world have the facility of dual citizenship, but according to the Indian Citizenship Law, if a person takes the citizenship of any other country, he has to give up his Indian citizenship, the number of such people is in lakhs who are citizens of America, Britain. Or have taken citizenship of countries like Canada but their connection with India remains.
These people had to obtain a visa to come to India after renouncing their Indian citizenship. Keeping in mind the convenience of such people, the Government of India announced the issue of OCI card in 2006 on the occasion of Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas.

Who can get an OCI and what are its benefits?

The person must have either previously been a citizen of India, or his or her parents must have been an Indian citizen. Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan and Iran are some of the countries where people of Indian origin cannot get this facility.
In a way, OCI provides the facility to live, work and conduct all types of economic transactions in India throughout life. Along with this, an OCI holder can come to India whenever he wants without a visa. OCI card is valid for life. People coming from abroad have to register with the police if they stay in India for more than 90 days, but OCI card holders are exempted from this. According to the Home Ministry, till now OCI cards have been issued to more than 20 lakh people.
According to the Home Ministry website, OCI card holders have all the rights like Indian citizens but there are four things they cannot do…
Cannot contest elections.
Cannot vote.
Cannot hold government job or constitutional post.
Cannot buy agricultural land.
When do OCI cards get cancelled?
Cases of cancellation of OCI card are less common. These cards are canceled after they are found in violation of the rules based on inputs from intelligence and security agencies. Of the more than 40 lakh OCI cards issued so far, only 150 have been cancelled.
